What a digital business card can track (and why that matters for follow-up)
Oct. 12, 2026
Almost everyone has a drawer full of other people's business cards. Almost nobody has a system. The problem isn't the paper — it's that a paper card is a one-way object: it tells you how to reach someone, but never tells you whether that contact was ever worth reaching.
I built the digital vCard service on this site (see the case study) around one question: **what if the card itself generated the signal?**
**What a tracked digital card knows.**
- **Who opened it, and when.** Each card lives behind its own campaign link. When a contact opens it, that's a timestamped event tied to where you met.
- **Who actually saved the details.** Opening is curiosity; saving is intent. The two events are logged separately, and the gap between them is telling — a contact who opened three times and never saved is thinking about it; one who saved the same hour is ready for follow-up.
- **Where the moment happened.** Location is logged at city level. Two events in Cork in one week reads differently than one in Dublin — useful when you're choosing between two conferences for next year.
- **Whether the interest is mutual.** Contacts can save their own details back to you, which quietly builds a list of warm leads without a single LinkedIn cold message.
**Why this changes follow-up.** The classic networking problem is triage: you meet thirty people and have capacity to properly follow up with five. Paper gives you no triage signal, so you follow up alphabetically or by mood. Tracked cards give you an ordered list: saved-most-recently first, then opened-repeatedly, then the rest on a slower drip. Same thirty contacts, same five follow-ups — but they're the right five.
**The privacy line.** Everything above is aggregate and city-level. No personal profiles, no device fingerprinting, no selling data. A tracked card that feels like surveillance kills the trust it was supposed to build.
The service runs on my Django site and needs no CRM licence. If your follow-up after events is still a guess, ask me for a free audit — I'll tell you whether tracked cards fit your sales cycle or whether a different automation serves you better.
