Case Study

Digital business cards that know who opened them

Consultant networking at events and conferences · Django · vCard · Campaign Tracking · Geo Delivery

The problem

Paper business cards answer one question — "can I reach this person" — and nothing else. My client handed out cards at events and never knew which contacts actually saved his details, when they did it, or whether follow-ups should happen at all.

Every follow-up call was a guess. Contacts he met twice a week apart were treated identically to strangers from a conference nine months ago.

What I built

I built a digital vCard service on Django with campaign tracking built in:

1. Every contact gets a link from their own vCard campaign, not a shared download page.
2. When the card is opened, the system logs the time, the campaign it belongs to and the rough location (city level, no personal tracking).
3. When the contact saves the card, that event is recorded too — so the client knows the difference between "opened and ignored" and "actually saved my details".
4. Contacts can capture their own details back, which feeds a lightweight CRM of warm leads.

No CRM licences were needed — the whole lead layer runs inside the existing Django site and emails summaries to the owner.

The result

Follow-ups are now ordered by who actually saved the card and when, not by gut feeling. The client knows within hours which event produced warm contacts and which one produced nothing — before deciding whether to attend it again.

Stack: Django, custom vCard generation, campaign tracking, geo-aware delivery.
